These two friends found Lil Mama in a parking lot. Then came a wonderful (puppy) surprise.
Stephanie Fikes and Justin Richie are two best friends in Alabama. They found a beautiful pit bull mix at a grocery store parking lot, heavily pregnant and dehydrated.
Lil Mama, as they called her, came with them to their home, ready to give birth. Stephanie and Justin did not anticipate that when she finally gave birth, it would be to not 5 puppies, not 10 puppies, but 15 entire puppies!
Average puppy batches
Normal puppy births tend to be between one to twelve. Studies have shown that the average number of puppies in a litter is 5 to 6. Tia, a Neapolitan mastiff, gave birth to 24 puppies in 2004 and broke records.
Many factors influence the number of puppies in a litter- age of the mother, her breed, genetic factors, the size of the mother, her diet, and so on. If there’s a larger gene pool for the mother to borrow from, chances are that the litter will be bigger as well.
Breeding has caused problems too
Breeders tend to make dogs give birth more than twice a year- and this causes many health problems for the mothers over time. The mothers are forced to give birth and then are often abandoned after they are no longer of use to the breeder. At VOSD, we have the option to surrender dogs rescued from breeders/ puppy mills that have been tried to be re-homed without success. To know more write to firstname.lastname@example.org.
Lil Mama’s heartwarming rescue
When Justin and Stephanie rescued Lil Mama from the parking lot, they did not realize that she would bless the house with this many puppies. They are now working on finding homes for these little ones, but only after they are 8 weeks (2 months) old.
They started an Instagram account called @fifteenpuppies to document the journey of the doggos.
