Who are ‘PatriotDogs’?
Retired service dogs, or PatriotDogs as we call them, are the thousands of dogs that serve our country in the Indian military, paramilitary, police, and special forces.
PatriotDogs are trained in various specialties like explosive detection, tracking down insurgents or terrorists, and mounting massive search-and-rescues. From the tender age of just two months, they serve our country through the prime of their lives — usually until around 8 years. It’s a sad fact that until 2015, they were euthanised at the end of their service till the Supreme Court put an end to the practice. VOSD has a purpose-built facility at the VOSD Dog Sanctuary for these dogs to ensure they have a safe, happy, and healthy old age.
VOSD takes in patriot dogs at no cost, and we give them the life they deserve.
#PatriotDogs Campaign by VOSD
#PatriotDogs from Kerala, Karnataka, Railway Police, and the military are already in VOSD’s care at the VOSD Sanctuary and Hospital. The VOSD Dog Sanctuary is unique because it has hundreds of rescued dogs from all over the country and has full medical and other facilities in its 3.5-acre campus.
In 2017 we started a #PatriotDogs campaign which found great support from the top cricketers, leading stars from Hindi and Kannada cinema and TV, and other well-known celebrities who came forward to encourage their fans to support VOSD to bring in many more Patriot Dogs.
Through social media, dog-loving stars such as Virat Kohli, Chris Gayle, Rahul Dravid, Venkatesh Prasad, Nana Patekar, Boman Irani, Soha Ali Khan, Ashwini Ponnappa, Prasad Bidapa, Sanjjanaa Galrani, Kitu Gidwani, Divya Seth Shah, and Nitin Sahrawat asked their fans and followers to contribute to the #PatriotDogs campaign VOSD. The campaign was also endorsed by leading football team, Bengaluru FC, and media giant, Reliance Entertainment.

HOW TO
Surrender a Patriot Dog to VOSD
To admit a retired service dog at VOSD, please write to info@vosd.in and follow the process mentioned below. VOSD does not charge any surrender fees for retired service dogs. We want to ensure these valiant dogs get love and care in their old age after serving the nation throughout their lives.
- If we are persuaded that the circumstance warrants our intervention, and that you’re responsible for the dog and have shared accurate and verifiable information, we will accept any dog, without passing judgment on you.
- This policy is entirely on VOSD’s discretion and can be discontinued, withdrawn or modified at any time without notice.
- The decision of accepting or not accepting a dog rests solely with VOSD.
- Please note there is NO SURRENDER FEE for Patriot Dogs
Do understand that it’s better to find a home for the dog before bringing him to us (as we are a new environment however safe!)
SURRENDER PROCESS EXPLAINED
- For patriot dogs, we require proof of the dog’s years of service. This may be in the form of video and/or photographic evidence.
- Once you get approval to surrender a dog to VOSD, you need to send us the vaccination and medical certificates as mentioned on the surrender link that will be shared with you.
REQUIRED DOCUMENTS:
(1) A vet certificate on the dog’s age
(2) Dog’s present condition
(3) Diagnosis and prescription of medicines, if any
(4) A photograph of the dog
(5) We will receive the dog from you on verification that the dog is tick and flea free (since the dog will come to a boarding/halfway home first)
(6) DLHPPi + Rabies shot documents. - Our team will connect you with our boarding partner in Bangalore to drop the dog. You will have to bear the transport cost as we do not provide transportation.
- VOSD will pay the boarding fees till we pick up the dog from the boarding center.
- After we pick up the dog from the boarding partner center, our team will send you an update when the dog reaches VOSD. That is the only update we share about surrendered dogs before we close the surrender ticket.
- We do not allow visits for surrendered dogs nor do we provide any individual updates about the surrendered dog. This is our standard surrender policy.
- If you do not agree with our surrender policy, kindly do not approach us to surrender the dog.
- Please note that we don’t admit non-vaccinated dogs to VOSD.
NOTE: If you choose to surrender a Patriot Dog to the VOSD Sanctuary and Hospital, please remember that this is still as per the terms of the VOSD Standard Operating Procedure on visitation, which means no individual updates are provided for surrendered dogs and visits are not allowed.
